Hosta of the Year

h. Liberty

Liberty

June leaf-1

Hostas are shade tolerant perennial plants which are grown mainly for their foliage. These easy to grow plants, are native to Korea, Japan and China but are gaining popularity in Canada. They range in colour from pale apple green to deep green, some with shades of white to yellow to golden hues as highlights in the centre or edge of the leaf.

There are also various degrees of blue showing on some varieties, which holds its blue tone best when not in direct sun. Hostas now range in size from ones that can almost be grown to maturity in a teacup to ones that are almost 6 feet tall. Although hostas are fast growing plants, which allows for dividing and sharing, they make take up to five years or more to reach mature size. They are shade tolerant, but grow in varying conditions from full sun to a shady woodland or damp area near the side of a pond.

The images of the hostas on this web site were taken in our gardens, and shows that not all our plants are a mature size yet. The online Hosta Library has excellent pictures of hostas, to help fill the spaces where our own pictures are not available or not as good as we would like.
